Easter Message

Dear brothers and sisters,

We might be surprised that Easter is already here! Lent has gone so fast full of probably an unending to do list. We have tried to come closer to God and have been more or less successful or unsuccessful in our endeavours.  No matter our gaze on Lent, now is the time to celebrate Easter and to follow the Lord – the best we can – in his Passion and Resurrection. Holy Week and the Triduum celebrations are in this respect very good opportunities for us to stop looking at ourselves and our achievements or failures and  focus on our Lord Jesus Christ, to what He did for us out of love. It is no longer about us anymore but more about Him.

This can remind us of our experiences in previous years and we could reasonably ask ourselves “But what is different this year? What has changed in my life? Or what should I expect from the Paschal mystery this year which I have not received previously?” Actually one thing has changed for sure: it is us! We are not the same people: we have accumulated new experiences, gone through new challenges and difficulties – at work, in our families, in relationships – but also had new joys and hopes. This is true for those around us as well and in our world. As a result, our hopes and expectations from the Lord may be different as new experiences are bound to impact on our faith.

In all cases, Easter brings along a unique message that we are not made for death but for life, and life in fulness. This year during the Easter Vigil, we are reading Matthew’s Gospel of the Resurrection and, like Mary Magdalene at the tomb, we can be afraid at this stage for many reasons –because of ourselves and our failings, our wrong choices and disappointments, our unsuccessful Lent, and as the angel rightly said, we might have been seeking and not finding Jesus. Easter is the celebration of life because we have been created for life and Jesus invites us today not be afraid. The risen Lord is seldom where we expect to find Him, in the tomb, but He is waiting for us, going ahead of us in our own Galilee, where we are to see Him.

I wish to you all a blessed Feast of the Resurrection.
