LAUDATO SI
“Christians need an ecological conversion, whereby the effects of their encounter with Jesus Christ become evident in their relationship with the world around them. Living our vocation to be protectors of God’s handiwork is essential to a life of virtue; it is not an optional or a secondary aspect of our Christian experience.”
These words were written by Pope Francis in his encyclical letter Laudato Si’ – On Care For Our Common Home. This week marks 10 years since the publication of this encyclical.
Laudato Si’ is not just about the environment and climate change. It invites everyone to consider the care of the whole Earth, the planet and the eight billion human beings living here. It is the poorest people in the less-developed nations who are most affected by ever-hotter temperatures, wildfires, droughts, floods and rising seas.
At its heart, Laudato Si’ calls all of us, as Jesus does, to change our lives. It is easy to think that whatever changes we can make in our lives, they are only small and can have little effect compared to the global effort that all nations must make to mitigate and maybe reverse climate change and the reduction in biodiversity.
However, Pope Francis says, “We must not think that these efforts are not going to change the world….. they benefit society, often unbeknown to us, for they call forth a goodness which tends to spread.”
We can all consider how our actions and our way of life affect our common home and all of humanity, particularly the poor. The individual changes we could make cannot be listed here. There are plenty of ways to discover for yourself, and read Laudato Si’ if you have time.
We should strive to live more simply; if we don’t, some people won’t live.
