The Sacred Heart of Jesus
After the Feast of Corpus Christi, the following Friday, we celebrate the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The heart of Jesus is much more than a mere part of his body; it is his deepest and true identity. Knowing the heart of a person or what resides within it, allows us to truly know this person.
This feast, which is also a devotion, began in the 11th and 12th centuries and was instituted in the 17th century following the private revelation of the Lord Jesus to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, between 1673 and 1675, in Paray-le-Monial. She received several visions of Jesus, in which he revealed to her his Heart surrounded by flames, symbolizing his transforming and purifying love for humanity. A crown of thorns encircles it, recalling His Passion. A cross is often placed above the heart, evoking His Redemptive Sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. A wound representing His Side.
The Sacred Heart of Jesus is also the message of Gospel which reveals the unconditional love of God in Jesus Christ, who died for the salvation of the world on the cross with his side pierced. God's love, generously offered to men and women, but not received by them. The first message of Jesus' revelation to Saint Margaret was: “My Divine Heart is so ablaze with love for women and men, and for you in particular, that, no longer able to contain within Itself the flames of Its ardent charity, It must spread them through you and manifest Itself to humanity in order to enrich peoples with the precious graces of sanctification and salvation necessary to draw them from the abyss of perdition.”
Jesus Christ, Son of the living God and Son of the blessed Mary, reveals his Sacred Heart, a human and a divine heart which is the very essence of his identity that “God is love”. A living heart, touched by our happiness and wounded by our weaknesses, our rejections, and our sins. A living heart, ablaze with love, mercy, and compassion for those who come to Jesus, repent, and believe in him. Today, Jesus, who loves us, desires to restore us, save us, forgive our sins, and fill us with his graces. His loving heart is always open and offered to console and strengthen those who are brokenhearted, those weakened by life, the sick, those who are grieving, those seeking work, and the lonely and destitute.
