Going to God our Father
“I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father” (Jn 16:28)
Jesus does not go alone to the Father but with his brothers and sisters, those given to him by the Father and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. Those who hear his voice, believe him and follow him. Jesus expressed this will to the disciples saying: “If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.” (Jn 14:3)
As members of the church and body of Christ, we have our place in the midst of the Holy Trinity, because Jesus the Son of God is there, as the Head of the Church, at the right hand of God the Father. This is the mystery of the Ascension of the Lord, which we are going to celebrate this week. Jesus is present now in the Holy Trinity with his human body and the wounds from His passion, but glorified by the resurrection.
The Lord Jesus, apparently absent but present through faith in the sacraments of the Church makes us able to be with him today. For this, he and the Father send a helper to guide us: the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth. He comes to us when we surrender ourselves to the Lord Jesus, when we accept his love, when we accept to be saved by his mercy and we begin to love him by committing ourselves to keep and obey his word and his commandments. This is the way to be born of the Spirit and the way to be filled with joy by God.
The Holy Spirit works within us and transforms us to make us be able to overcome our fears and worries, to be faithful to Jesus, to have hope and faith in God, to be courageous when we feel weak and in pain, to have the boldness to be witnesses of Jesus, to be children of God and to pray to God our Father, like Jesus.
“I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.” Jn 16:26-27
